          Places of Interest in Mumbai

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.

                                                                                                                - St. Augustine

The Gateway of India:

These arches, which have now become almost a symbol of the city, were built to welcome King George V and his Queen Mary who had landed at Apollo Bunder in December 1911. The structure itself was completed in its current form only 13 years later in December 1924! Until then, when the couple returned to UK in January 1912 a temporary Mughal pavilion was erected at this site, which was later razed to give way to the magnificent Gateway arches.

These arches have now become a symbol of all that Mumbai stands for - hope, hospitality and hard work. It is a reminder that the city's prosperity was built with the labour and enterprise of migrants from all over the country and from other parts of the world (something that some political parties would like us forget!)
