Ancient temples at Pattadakal

The Shiva temple complex at the Pattadakal town houses 9 Shiva temples built by the Chalukya King’s in 7th and 8th century. It combines northern Indian (the leftmost and middle temple in the picture above) and Southern Indian style of architecture (the right most temple in the picture).

Legend has it that this was the site for coronation of various Chalukya kings since the site lies just beside Malaprabha river and the river here becomes uttargamini – the one that flows north, which is considered very auspicious.
